What the new trilogy got right and how some of what they messed up could have been fixed.

O que a nova trilogia acertou e como consertar coisas simples que fariam toda diferença.

It’s been three days since I watched Star Wars Episode IX. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so much that I watched it again yesterday. Yes, it is blockbuster. Yes, Disney is taking all my money. Yes, Star Wars is a great cash cow but there is a lot more to be discussed about the last installment of the new trilogy than all the screenwriting issues and how commercial it is (buy your bb8 PJ’s here). Talking about Star Wars means a conversation about love, space fascists, forgiveness… and I am not ready to exit the theatre. Be aware: spoilers are strong in this one.

Faz três dias que eu assisti o episódio 9 de Star Wars, Não consegui parar de pensar no filme e me mandei para o cinema ontem assistir mais uma vez. Sim, é um blockbuster. Sim, a Disney está tomando todo o meu dinheiro. Sim, Star Wars é o pote de ouro do outro lado do arco-íris, mas tem muito mais que pode ser discutido sobre a parte final da nova trilogia do que somente erros de roteiro e o quão comercial é a saga (compre seu pijama do bb8 aqui).

George Lucas’ fascination with mythology, his friendship with Joseph Campbell, motivated him to deliberately create a modern myth. Despite all the criticisms of the new film, The Rise of Skywalker has not failed this portion of Lucas’ legacy. It is a space opera, a great classic drama, a story you could imagine people repeating to each other, whispering before bed in a galaxy far far away.

O fascínio de George Lucas por mitologia e sua amizade com Joseph Campbell o motivaram a criar um mito moderno. Apesar de todas as críticas à A Ascenção Skywalker , acredito que o novo filme nçao tenha falhado em manter este aspecto específico do legado de Lucas. É uma ópera espacial situada em torno de clássicos conflitos dramáticos e da pra imaginar pessoas sussurrando umas para as outras logo antes de dormir em galáxia tão tão distante.

I want to dissect some of the most important parts of the story arguing what makes the tale a myth and how it, in a certain way, honors what the creator of this Universe first proposed. Then, I want to talk about how I’d “fix” the screenwriting.

Gostaria de dissecar algumas das partes mais importantes da história, argumentando o que faz deste conto um mito e como, de alguma maneira, honra a proposta original do criador deste universo. Depois, quero conversar sobre como eu “consertaria” o roteiro.

 “Some things are stronger than blood”

 Myths are supposed to be explanations, not only of how the world works (what is lightning? What is love?) but how people should live their lives. Myths are, essentially, lessons. In any world, but especially this one, the lesson that one’s blood does not define them is important. I would even argue, necessary.

Mitos são explicações, não somente sobre como o mundo funciona (o que são raios? O que é o amor?), mas como pessoas deveriam viver suas vidas. Mitos são, essencialmente, lições. Em qualquer mundo, mas em especial neste, a lição de que a origem de alguém não o define é importante. Eu diria, até, necessária.

Psychology has dabbled with the meaning of parentage for more than a century. Stories have been poking on this topic for millenniums. Zeus committed patricide, one could argue God allowed the killing of his only son, Luke’s father is Darth Vader (shock) and Kylo Ren murdered his dad. Big stories, envaulted in magic and miracles, allow for discussions on humanity’s most intimate curses and blessings: the people who raise us form who we are. Should we choose to revolt against them or follow their path, the bonds with people we did not choose defines our lives whether we want it or not. How it is going to define it is up to us.

A psicologia tem discutido o significado de parentesco por mais de um século. Histórias tem cutucado este tópico por milênios. Zeus cometeu patricídio, pode ser argumentado que Deus permitiu o assassinato do próprio filho, o pai de Luke é Darth Vader (uau) e Kylo Ren matou seu pai. Grandes histórias, cercada de mágica e milagres, permitem discussões sobre as bênçãos e maldições mais íntimas da humanidade: As pessoas que nos criaram formam quem nós somos. Podemos escolher a revolta contra eles ou seguir seu caminho, os laços com pessoas que não escolhemos define nossas vidas quer a gente queira ou não.

There is a teenager, somewhere, right now, who is living with a violent parent or guardian. The violence they witness is lodged within them. Depending on the circumstances and formation of the internal world of this child, they can feel like there is nothing to do but give in to the cycle of violence that has formed their memories and collaborated for the creation and understanding of who they are and how they should behave in the world.

Existe um adolescente, em algum lugar, agora mesmo, que está vivendo com um pai ou guardião violento. A agressividade que este jovem testemunha é alocada dentro dele. Dependendo das circunstâncias e formação do mundo interior dessa pessoa, ele pode sentir que não existe nada a fazer a não ser ceder ao ciclo de violência que forma suas memórias e  o entendimento de quem eles é e como deve se portar.

The Rise of Skywalker shows a battle that most people only have internally. One of the greatest things about fantasy is that it externalizes classic conflicts. Rey fights an evil version of herself, something so many of us do inside our heads every day. In this movie, I would argue we should have seen more of Rey’s rage and evil tendencies. Athena, Zeus, Aphrodite, for as incredible as they are, make mistakes. Rey should have made more mistakes and those mistakes should have had consequences, but more on that in a second.

A Ascenção Skywalker mostra a batalha que muitas pessoas travam internamente. Uma das mais belas coisas da ficção é que pode externalizar um conflito fácil. Rey luta uma versão má de si mesma, algo que tantos de nós fazemos em nossas cabeças todos os dias. Neste filme, eu argumentaria que deveríamos ter visto mais das tendências malignas de Rey. O mais legal de personagens mágicos como Zeus, Atena e Afrodite é que, por mais incríveis que sejam, eles cometem erros. Rey deveria ter cometidos mais erros e estes erros deveriam ter tido consequências, mas mais sobre isso em um instante.

When Luke turns to Rey and says “some things are stronger than blood” he is referring to the evil that runs through Rey’s veins but also how both Rey and Ben Solo should think about family. Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter, but her parents chose to fight against him. Ben Solo is Darth Vader’s grandson, but also the son of Leah and Han. He tried to reject the Jedi and not follow his parents’ path at the same time he did not realize the dangers and pain of trying to be like his grandfather. Both are “freed” when they decide to follow a path they feel was chosen by them. If myths are lessons, I like that one: If there is something stronger than where you came from is who you want to be.

Quando Luke diz para Rey que “existem coisas mais fortes que sangue” ele está se referindo a maldade que corre nas veias de Rey, mas também, a maneira com que Rey e Ben Solo deveriam pensar sobre família. Rey é a neta de Palpatine, mas seus pais escolheram lutar contra ele. Bem é o avô de Darth Vader, mas também o filho de Leah e Han. Ele tentou rejeitar os Jedi e não seguir o caminho de seus pais ao mesmo tempo em que eles não perceberam os perigos e a dor de tentar ser como seu avô. Ambos são “libertados” quando decidem seguir um caminho que eles sentem que foi escolhido por eles mesmos. Se mitos são lições, eu gosto desta: se tem algo mais forte do que onde você veio é quem você quer ser.

One of the beautiful things about myths is that, more than most works of fiction, they make us confront the pain of life through the eyes of people we would show no compassion for. Ben Solo is a patricide, serial murderer who contributes with the First Order’s baby stealing practices and destroys entire planets without thinking twice (unless his mommy is on the ship).

Uma das coisas mais bonitas sobre mitos é que, mais do que outras histórias, eles fazem com que confrontemos a dor da vida através dos olhos das pessoas por quem não demonstraríamos nenhuma compaixão. Ben Solo é um patricida, assassino em massa que contribui com a prática de sequestro de bebês da primeira ordem e destrói planetas inteiros sem pensar duas vezes (a não ser que sua mamãe esteja na nave).

If Kylo Ren was a real-life person we would take turns forever spitting on his grave. But Kylo Ren is not a person, the two parts of him, including Ben Solo, are a myth. He is a story created to exercise our hope and forgiveness muscles. Hope that we can remember there is a person under every mask and if we act soon enough that person can be saved, and forgiveness because even though Kylo Ren wasn’t saved we still feel relief for him. I don’t know about y’all but I found myself cheering for Han Solo’s assassin to save the world independently of what he did before. Not forgiving him for the atrocities he committed but genuinely hoping he would do something good and even feel love. Believing that a person who did terrible things can still do good is the type of lesson I want my children to learn and it has been exercised to it’s maximum in tales like Star Wars.

Se Kylo Ren fosse uma pessoa real, teria sempre alguém cuspindo em sua lápide. Mas Kylo Ren não é uma pessoa. As duas partes dele, incluindo Bem Solo, são mitos. Ele é uma história criada para exercitar nossos músculos de esperança e perdão. Esperança de que somos capazes de lembrar que existe uma pessoa por trás de toda máscara e que se agirmos rápido o suficiente essa pessoa pode ser salva. E perdão porque porque apesar de Kylo Ren não ter sido salvo ainda é possível sentir alívio por ele. Eu não sei vocês, mas me encontrei por vezes torcendo para que o assassino de Han Solo salvasse a galáxia independentemente do que ele fez antes. Não o perdoei pelas atrocidades cometidas, mas genuinamente esperei que ele fizesse coisas boa e até sentisse amor. Acreditar que uma pessoa que fez coisas terríveis ainda pode fazer coisas boas é o tipo de coisa que eu gostaria de ensinar aos meus filhos e foi exercitado ao extremo em contos como Star Wars.

Let’s be honest: We don’t know where people go after they die. If you say you know for a fact what’s going to happen after you shut your eyes for the last time, well… ok. Most people live not knowing where grandpa went

Sejamos honestos: não sabemos para onde a gente vai depois que morre. Se você diz que sabe com certeza o que vai acontecer depois que você fechar os olhos pela última vez, bom... ok. A maior parte das pessoas vive sem saberam para onde foi o vovô.

But hey… no matter where you are as far as religion goes, we live hoping something, be it material or metaphysical, stays. Even if it’s just a grain of dust that once was you, something, please, stay.

Mas, olha… não imposta o que você acredita em termos de religião, vivemos esperando que algo, material ou metafísico, permaneça. Mesmo que seja apenas a poeira que um dia seremos, por favor, permaneça.

Star Wars touches on that theme in two ways: One is through the infamous Jedi ghosts and voices that color the story and actually guide the characters in times they feel lost. The other one is that stories about people that were once alive not only guide the characters but have power over them.

Star Wars aborda este tema de duas maneiras: A primeira é através dos infames jedi fantasmas e vozes que colorem a história e efetivamente guiam os personagens em momentos em que eles se sentem perdidos. A outra, é que as histórias contadas sobre pessoas que um dia existiram não somente guiam os personagens, mas tem poder sobre eles.

Darth Vader was most definitely not alive when Kylo Ren was born but his trajectory was guided by Vader’s legacy. If one is sensitive enough to see, the marks of the people that once were are all around us, guiding us, somehow, to where we need to be. Just like his grandfather, Ben Solo eventually was liberated from the alter ego he chose to live as and found, some, peace.

Darth Vade definitivamente não estava vivo quando Kylo Ren nasceu mas sua trajetória foi guiada pelo legado de Vader. Se alguém é sensível o suficiente para ver, perceberá que as marcs de pessoas que um dia existiram estão a nossa volta, nos guiando, de algum jeito. Assim como seu avô, Bem Solo eventualmente foi libertado do alter ego que escolheu como sua identidade. e encontrou, alguma, paz.

How to fix (a bit of) the script

Como consertar (um pouco d) o roteiro

Things need to have consequences. The themes mentioned above are classic mythological enterprises, essentially, who we are, how we are formed and what we leave behind. Some script choices have made these themes so profoundly essential a little less deep.

Ações precisam ter consequências. Os temas mencionados acima são clássicos dramas mitológicos, essencialmente, quem somos, como somos formados e o que deixamos para trás. Algumas das escolhas de roteiro fizeram esses temas tão profundamente essenciais um pouco mais rasos.

Rey has a dark side (like we all do). She has an evil grandfather, but she should have a dark side herself. Yes, she is angry that her parents died, but there are very few moments where that anger is explored and she ends up doing regrettable things. I would for sure have killed chewie and would have replaced one of her many pointless fights with Kylo Ren for a scene where they celebrate the life of Han Solo’s best friend.

Rey tem um lado negro (todo mundo tem). Ela tem um avô perverso, mas ela deveria ter um lado maldoso próprio. Sim, ela está com raiva que seus pais morreram, mas tem poucos momentos em que essa raiva é explorada e ela termina fazendo coisas das quais se arrepende. Eu, com certeza teria matado o Chewie e teria substituído uma de suas lutas sem sentindo com Kylo Ren por uma cena onde eles celebram a vida do melhor amigo de Han Solo.

Every war has consequences. The Last Jedi had really terrible stuff, from a lost Benicio Del Toro to a casino plot that had no pacing or long-lasting changes to that place (in thirty minutes they locked the animals, fixed the windows and beat the children). One thing that movie accomplished is a brief exploration of life and death situations (although Finn or Rose should have died. Maybe I’m too dramatic for Disney features). C3PO should have lost his memory at least until the time where Anakin was his master. That would have connected the trilogies even more, making the Palpatine plot less random and brought an even stronger myth characteristic to the surface: Stories repeat themselves. Myths are eternal cycles, the battles between Gods and Titans, good and evil, monsters and heroes are ongoing just like the galaxy’s battle for democracy. Finally, maybe that evil ritual was a bad idea (you have to kill me!), but Rey being Palpatine’s granddaughter adds to the “saga” aspect of Star Wars it closes a story reinforcing the idea that it will inevitably repeat itself. Just like myths do.

Toda Guerra tem consequências. Os últimos Jedi tinha coisas terríveis, de um Benício Del Toro perdido a uma linha narrativa inteira (a do cassino) sem ritmo ou mudanças naquele lugar (em 30 minutos eles prenderam os animais, consertaram as janelas e espancaram as crianças). Uma coisa em que aquele filme foi bem sucedido foi uma exploração interessante de reações a situações-limite (apesar de que Finn ou Rose deveriam ter morrido. Talvez eu seja muito dramática para produções da Disney). C3PO deveria ter perdido sua memória pelo menos até o tempo em que Anakin era seu mestre. Isso poderia ser uma saída para conectar as trilogias ainda mais, sem fazer o plot Palpatine parecer tão forçado e trazendo a superfície uma outra característica mitológica: histórias se repetem. Mitos são ciclos eternos, batalhas entre deuses e titãs, bem e mal, monstros e heróis, é contínua assim como a batalha da galáxia por democracia. Finalmente, talvez o ritual tenha sido uma má ideia (“você deve me matar!”), mas Rey ser a neta de Palpatine colabora com o aspecto de “saga” tão presente em Star Wars. Fecha uma história reforçando a ideia de que ela vai, inevitavelmente, se repetir – como mitos fazem.

PS. I feel like I can’t leave without discussing Adam Driver. Adam Driver was the best thing hands down.

PS. Sinto que não posso sair sem discutir Adam Driver. Adam Driver foi a melhor coisa com certeza.
